Linux Warning – Recent Mint Version.

  • Warning! — Linux Mint Website Hacked and ISOs replaced with Backdoored Operating System
Are you also the one who downloaded Linux Mint on February 20th? You may have been Infected!
Linux Mint is one of the best and popular Linux distros available today, but if you have downloaded and installed the operating system recently you might have done so using a malicious ISO image.
    Here’s why:
Last night, Some unknown hacker or group of hackers had managed to hack into the Linux Mint website and replaced the download links on the site that pointed to one of their servers offering a malicious ISO images for the Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon Edition.

“Hackers made a modified Linux Mint ISO, with a backdoor in it, and managed to hack our website to point to it,” the head of Linux Mint project Clement Lefebvre said in a surprising announcement dated February 21, 2016.

    Who are affected?

As far as the Linux Mint team knows, the issue only affects the one edition, and that is Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon edition.
The situation happened last night, so the issue only impacts people who downloaded the above-mentioned version of Linux Mint on February 20th.

  • New York Judge Arrested For DUI On Way To Court
We have previously dealt with the issue of judges arrested for DUI and how to address such cases in their continuing on the court (here and here and here and here and here). Another such case has arisen with the arrest in New York of Judge Leticia Astacio. While it was a Saturday morning, police say that Astacio was on her way to work when she had an accident with another car on Interstate 490. She refused to take a Breathalyzer and was arrested for DUI. Astacio is a former assistant district attorney who prosecuted drunk driving cases. Astacio was elected to the court in 2014 and was scheduled to preside over criminal court arraignments. Her car had heavy front end damage and two flat tires on the driver’s side. In the police report, a trooper says he smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Astacio’s breath and charged her with DWI. She refused the breath test.
  • The Nobility of Good Lawyers With Bad Clients
n the early hours of the morning, law professors wonder whether anything we do makes the world a better place.Today, I feel pretty sure that the answer is yes. That’s because, on January 28, I awoke to a televised image of Ammon Bundy’s lawyer, Mike Arnold of Eugene, Oregon, reading a statement urging the other Malheur protesters to stand down. Arnold is a former student of mine. So is Tiffany Harris of Portland, who represents Shawna Cox, the 59-year-old woman who was arrested in the car with LaVoy Finicum, the militant spokesman who was shot during a traffic stop near the occupied Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.I couldn’t be prouder. That’s not because I like their clients.

  • Younger lawyers are most at risk for substance abuse and mental health problems, a new study reports

A new study released just prior to the 2016 ABA Midyear Meeting in San Diego rejects the prevailing wisdom about substance abuse and mental health problems in the U.S. legal profession on two key points.

First, the levels of problem drinking and mental health issues in the legal profession appear to be higher than indicated by previous studies. And second, younger lawyers are the segment of the profession most at risk of substance abuse and mental health problems. Previous studies indicated that older lawyers were more at risk for developing problems in both areas.

The study was conducted jointly by the ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs and the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, based in Center City, Minnesota.

  • Cliven Bundy, 4 others face federal indictment in Nevada

Ammon Bundy, brother Ryan Bundy, Ryan Payne and Peter Santilli — already indicted in the armed takeover of a federal wildlife refuge in eastern Oregon — now face federal indictment along with Cliven Bundy in the 2014 armed standoff near the Bundy ranch in Nevada.

The indictment charges the four with 16 felonies: one count of conspiring to commit an offense against the United States, one count of conspiring to impede or injure a federal officer, four counts of carrying a firearm in a crime of violence, two counts of assault on a federal officer, two counts of threatening a federal law enforcement officer, three counts of obstructing justice, two counts of interfering with interstate commerce by extortion and one count of interstate travel in aid of extortion.

It also levels five counts of criminal forfeiture against each defendant. If convicted of the offenses, they would have to forfeit property obtained from the proceeds of their crimes, totaling at least $3 million, including cattle at the so-called Bunkerville Allotment and Lake Mead National Recreational Area in Nevada. They also would have to forfeit firearms and ammunition used in the April 12, 2014, standoff with federal authorities.

  • Oregon militant accuses feds of committing ‘works of the devil’ in $666 billion lawsuit
Shawna Cox, who was arrested last month during the militant takeover at a federal reserve in Oregon, sued federal officials on Wednesday, accusing them of victimizing herself and her compatriots. This story has been updated. Please see below.

“I am asking for criminal and civil penalties for the perpetrators that subjected me and my witnesses to the crimes I have identified herein,” the lawsuit stated. “I Claim I and the others involved in these actions have suffered damages from the works of the devil in excess of $666,666,666,666.66.”

02/17/2016 162 Notice titled “Affirmative Defense, Notice of Criminal Counter Suite against Federal Employees and Other John and Jane Does 1-1000 with Claim for Damages by Declaration of Shawna Cox” filed pro se as to Shawna Cox. The Court directs the Clerk to file this pro se submission for the record. The Court notes, however, that to the extent Defendant’s pro se assertions are in the nature of civil claims for damages or other civil remedies they are not cognizable in this criminal proceeding and, therefore, will not be addressed in this case. To the extent Defendant’s assertions form the basis of any defense to the criminal charge against her, the Court directs Defendant to work with her counsel, Tiffany Harris, for the purpose of pleading and presenting them in a proper form and at the proper time. Right of Action

  • CHAP. XVIII. Of Tyranny.
Sec. 202. Where-ever law ends, tyranny begins, if the law be transgressed to another’s harm; and whosoever in authority exceeds the power given him by the law, and makes use of the force he has under his command, to compass that upon the subject, which the law allows not, ceases in that to be a magistrate; and, acting without authority, may be opposed, as any other man, who by force invades the right of another. This is acknowledged in subordinate magistrates. He that hath authority to seize my person in the street, may be opposed as a thief and a robber, if he endeavours to break into my house to execute a writ, notwithstanding that I know he has such a warrant, and such a legal authority, as will impower him to arrest me abroad.

  • Sheriffs’ association asked to investigate Palmer’s conduct
People have asked state sheriff’s association to investigate Sheriff Palmer’s conduct regarding refuge occupation.

The Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association has been asked to investigate the conduct of Grant County Sheriff Glenn Palmer.

Association President Brian Wolfe, the sheriff of Malheur County, said, at the request of citizens, an executive board would be looking into Palmer’s conduct regarding the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge to determine whether to launch an official investigation.

“What the association will do is look at all the facts: We’ll gather evidence and information, and then if we think there is a violation of the state sheriffs’ (association) bylaws or ethics, then we would take whatever would be the appropriate action,” he said. “We would just want to make sure, first of all, that sheriffs in Oregon are following the law and following their oath.”

All sheriffs in Oregon, he said, vow to uphold both the state and federal Constitution. He said the association has bylaws in effect that allow the expulsion of a member for misconduct, though he is not aware of any members being removed in the past. Currently, he said, all 36 Oregon sheriffs are members.

Expulsion is the most severe punishment available to the association, Wolfe said. If a criminal investigation was warranted, he said, it would be handled by a law enforcement agency, not the association.

Wolfe said he has not seen evidence indicating misconduct by Palmer and that he would need to see hard facts before commenting further.

  • Letter: Sheriff’s wife speaks out for her husband

    Sheriff’s wife clarifies husband’s actions.

    To the Editor:

As the wife of (Sheriff) Glenn Palmer, I feel compelled to set the record straight regarding allegations involving meetings and a community event that Sheriff Palmer was asked to attend.

When he was invited to a lunch meeting, he did not know who was going to be in attendance.

When he was asked to go to Burns, to help mediate the meetings, he told them no, not without the consent of their sheriff.

He never met with Ammon Bundy as quoted in the Oregonian, or LaVoy Finicum. He didn’t set up the community event at the Senior Center. He wasn’t going to address the group except for a few minutes to clear up these allegations, when he heard about the shooting (over two hours after it happened). He left and came home to get his vehicle and then picked up the district attorney and drove to Seneca. He never knew about the ambush, or had anything to do with it.

In Seneca (over 25 miles away from the incident), he pulled up to the road block by the state police. While he was talking to them, a car pulled up and a trooper said they have a rifle. So Glenn pulled out his shotgun for protection for himself and the D.A. It turned out to be a reporter, who took his picture while he was putting away his gun. Thus starting a new rumor.

Threats & Warnings

  • Feds Issue Warning On Revenge Threats Re: Malheur

Responding to a rising tide of threats in the wake of the standoff at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near Burns, Ore., federal authorities are warning law enforcement agencies around the nation to be on the lookout for retaliatory violence from extremists affiliated with the antigovernment movement.

Eleven people affiliated with Ammon Bundy’s “Citizens for Constitutional Freedom” were arrested in a law enforcement sweep operation on Jan. 26, while one member of the self-described “revolutionaries” – Robert “LaVoy” Finicum, a 54-year-old Arizona rancher – was shot and killed and while resisting arrest. More than two weeks later, on Feb. 11, the standoff ended when four remaining militants inside the compound surrendered to face federal charges for their activities during the takeover, which began Jan. 2.

“In response to news of the arrests, some militia extremists and their supporters have called for violence or unspecified nationwide action against law enforcement, federal facilities, and US government employees,” the bulletin, issued jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI, said.

  • Welcome to the Small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS) Registration Service

But Where Is The Required OMB number to lawfully Received Private Information?

  • Drone owners must register with FAA, starting December 21

The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday that US residents must register hobbyist drones by February 19 at its drone registration website. Registration opens December 21 and is free through January 20, the agency said. After that, the FAA will charge $5 for registration.

Accepting the guidance of an advisory panel, the FAA said registration is required for any hobbyist drone weighing between 0.55 pounds and 55 pounds. That weight limit includes even relatively small drones like the $549 Parrot Bebop 2, not just the serious $1,000 hobby-oriented models from companies like DJI.

  • What Happens If You Don’t Register Your Drone with the FAA Today

If you own a drone and live in the United States, today is your last day to register with the federal government—at least, if you’re planning on complying with its new and controversial regulations for small remote-control aircraft.

Registration is mandatory for all pilots owning drones weighing more than half a pound, and costs $5. It also involves adding your name, address and contact information to a government database, which will soon be publicly searchable by an FAA-assigned registration number via the agency’s website.

The rules, introduced by the Federal Aviation Administration in December, have been harshly criticized by hobbyists, who see them as a disproportionate crackdown on a technology whose dangers have been routinely exaggerated.

Which of course leads to the obvious question: What will happen to hobbyist drone pilots that fail to comply?

In all likelihood, the answer is “probably nothing.”

The FAA’s rules say that pilots failing to register could face up to $277,500 in civil and criminal fines and/or as many as three years in prison. But the FAA needs participation if the regulations are going to have teeth, and so far the entire registration initiative has had an incredibly rocky start.

  • Sneaky Change to the TPP Drastically Extends Criminal Penalties

When the text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) was first released in November last year, it included provisions dictating the kinds of penalties that should be available in cases of copyright infringement. Amongst those provisions, the following footnote allowed countries some flexibility in applying criminal procedures and penalties to cases of willful copyright infringement on a commercial scale:

With regard to copyright and related rights piracy provided for under paragraph 1, a Party may limit application of this paragraph to the cases in which there is an impact on the right holder’s ability to exploit the work, performance or phonogram in the market.

Following the footnote back to its source, it is apparent that the reference to limiting “the application of this paragraph” is to a more specific list of criminal procedures and penalties that the parties are required to make available in such cases. Paraphrased, these are:

    • sentences of imprisonment as well as deterrent-level monetary fines;
    • higher penalties in more serious circumstances, such as threats to public health or safety;
    • seizure of suspected infringing items, the materials and implements used to produce them, and documentary evidence relating to them;
    • the release of those items, materials, implements and evidence for use in civil proceedings;
    • forfeiture or destruction of those items, materials and implements;
    • forfeiture of any assets (such as money) derived from the infringement; and
    • the ability for officials to take legal action against the alleged infringer on their own initiative, without requiring a complaint from the rights holder (this is called “ex officio action”).

As of the date of writing, the text excerpted at the top of this page is still the version of the text found on the United States Trade Representative (USTR) website. However on January 26, a slightly different version was uploaded to the website of the official host of the agreement, New Zealand. This version provides:

With regard to copyright and related rights piracy provided for under paragraph 1, a Party may limit application of this subparagraph to the cases in which there is an impact on the right holder’s ability to exploit the work, performance or phonogram in the market.

Spot the difference? No? Let’s try again:

With regard to copyright and related rights piracy provided for under paragraph 1, a Party may limit application of this subparagraph to the cases in which there is an impact on the right holder’s ability to exploit the work, performance or phonogram in the market.

What does this surreptitious change from “paragraph” to “subparagraph” mean? Well, in its original form the provision exempted a country from making available any of the criminal procedures and penalties listed above, except in circumstances where there was an impact on the copyright holder’s ability to exploit their work in the market.

Digital Defense & Security?

  • Department of Defense Upgrading 4M Devices to Windows 10
The U.S. Department of Defense is embracing Microsoft’s latest operating system in a big way.
Secretary of Defense Ashton B. Carter has directed all DoD agencies currently using Microsoft operating systems to upgrade and standardize to Windows 10, Microsoft announced Wednesday. That amounts to some 4 million DoD devices and systems.
Microsoft Federal Chief Technology Officer Susie Adams said the rollout is “starting right away,” and the DoD aims to upgrade all devices and systems within one year.
“This is an unprecedented move for the DoD and the largest enterprise deployment of Windows 10 to date,” Adams wrote in a blog post.
Microsoft also today announced two security certifications, which it likely hopes will encourage others to make the leap to Windows 10: the National Information Assurance Program and the Defense Information Systems Agency Unified Capabilities Approved Products List, which is a list of products that meet the DoD’s “strict security and interoperability requirements,” Adams wrote.

  • FBI Wins Lawsuit Forcing Apple To Install Spyware On iPhone Devices

The FBI have won a lawsuit that will force Apple to develop security software designed to override encryption security features embedded in the iPhone.

The court decision was arrived at utilizing an old antidemocratic law from the 18th century – allowing the government to expand its police-state powers of surveillance on American citizens.

    Wsws.org reports:

The FBI and the Justice Department claim that the new software is necessary to enable federal investigators to search through an iPhone belonging to Syed Rizwan Farook, one of the attackers responsible for the mass shooting at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino.

At stake, however, is far more than the data on Farook’s phone. The government wants broad authority to bypass encryption mechanisms on any communications that it is not presently able to monitor.

US agents have been unable to access Farook’s phone as a result of Apple’s built-in “auto-erase” feature, which deletes the smartphone’s data after ten or more incorrect attempts to unlock it. The phone’s security features prevent the agency from employing its preferred method of “brute forcing” entry, i.e., trying every possible password.

Judge Sheri Pym of the Federal District Court for the District of Central California ruled Tuesday that Apple must find a way to “bypass and disable” the security features on Farook’s phone. Apple will appeal the ruling within days, and the case could be decided in the Supreme Court.

Government attorneys claim that the ruling compels Apple to design software that can penetrate the iPhone’s data protection systems, citing a statute known as the All Writs Act, which allows judges to “issue all writs necessary or appropriate in aid of their respective jurisdictions and agreeable to the usages and principles of law.” The administration has adopted a broad interpretation of the law that effectively allows the courts to overrule constitutional limitations on state powers.

  • Russian bank licences revoked for using hackers to withdraw funds

The Russian Central Bank  suspects that certain national banks have been using hackers to withdraw funds from the accounts of their clients according to the results of a recent investigation conducted by experts at the Central Bank.

Georgy Luntovsky, first deputy chairman of the Central Bank, told SCMagazineUK.com through his representative that in recent months many Russian banks and financial institutions have begun using fake cyberattacks, which help them to cover up their previous crimes or violations, as well as to withdraw money from the accounts of their clients.

Luntovsky has also added that in the fourth quarter of 2015 the Central Bank had revoked the licences of three domestic banks that had previously been reportedly subject to cybe- attacks by hackers.

According to data from the Russian Central Bank, in Q4 2015 alone cyber-attacks resulted in the theft of more than 1.5 billion rubles (US$ 20 million) from the accounts of clients at some Russian banks and there is a strong suspicion that these attacks could have taken place with the knowledge of these banks and even with their direct participation.

Criminals were able to cash funds using real credit cards, making thousands of anonymous bank transfers and falsifying accounting details of the banks’ counterparties.

Local Control Of Tyranny

  • Showdown: Sheriff Blocks FDA Inspectors From Raw Milk Farm
Federal agents subjected a farmer to harassment and warrantless searches simply for producing raw milk, but a county sheriff took the farmer’s side and blocked federal agents from the property – and the sheriff is now speaking out.The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and Department of Justice (DOJ) took the actions four years ago simply because the farmer was providing raw milk to an organic food co-op. The story is receiving renewed coverage because the Indiana sheriff, Elkhart County’s Brad Rogers, wrote a 600-word explanation for a local newspaper as part of his “Ask The Sheriff” series. Off The Grid News previously reported on the dispute.

Participants paid money into the co-op and, in return, received raw milk.

“It appeared to be harassment by the FDA and the DOJ, and making unconstitutional searches, in my opinion,” Rogers wrote of Uncle Sam’s treatment of the farmer in a column for the Goshen News.

International Control on Tyranny

  • Russia and Turkey Exchange Threats as War Tensions Reverberate Along Syrian Border
A bomb blast in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Wednesday—which killed dozens of people and injured scores of others—arrived alongside increasing global worries about how Turkey is responding to shifting developments on the other side of its border with Syria where a brutal civil war and international fight against the Islamic State continues.Over the recent days and weeks, the Syrian armed forces of President Bashar al-Assad, backed by Russian airstrikes and the Syrian Kurdish milita known as the YPG, have closed off vital supply routes of ISIS and opposition fighters while capturing long-held territory near the strategically-situated town of Azaz and the rebel stronghold of Aleppo in northwestern Syria.

While the Russian foreign ministry condemned Turkey’s shellling, describing it as “total lawlessness” along the border, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday vowed to do whatever it takes to keep the YPG from gaining more territory.

Robert Ellis, an expert on Turkey and contributor to The Independent newspaper, said that calling the current situation “complicated” would be “the understatement of the year” and went on to quote a U.S. policy expert who recently described the festering dynamics between Syria, the U.S., Russia, Turkey, and other regional players as “three-dimensional chess with nine players and no rules.”

While “regional powers such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar failed to overthrow Assad, and have achieved none of their war aims,” continued Cockburn, the Iranians, Russia, and the Shia coalition that also includes Hezbollah-led fighters from Lebanon have been much more successful inside Syria. Though many criticized Russia for entering the war in such a pronounced way, he concludes, recent events show that decision by President Vladimir Putin “has become central to deciding how the war will end.”

As investigative journalist and columnist Gareth Porter adds in his latest analysis, a “Russian-Syrian success offers the most realistic prospect for an end to the bloodletting in Syria and would also reduce the likelihood of an eventual Al Qaeda seizure of power in Syria.”

But it seems worth repeating: “What happens next is anything but clear.”

  • NATO warns Turkey it can’t count on support in a conflict with Russia as tensions escalate
European diplomats have warned the Turkish government that it cannot count on the NATO support should the conflict with Russia escalate into an armed conflict, according to German media.
Ankara has called for a joint ground operation in Syria with its international allies, insisting it is the only way to stop the country’s five-year war. Saudi Arabia has said it would be ready to take part in an international force to be deployed in Syria.
