Globalization Kills

  • Aerosols to protect Earth from global warming will be sprayed into the stratosphere NEXT YEAR, but scientists warn the results could be ‘catastrophic’

  • How automation and globalisation has killed the middle-class

From the IMF Direct blog comes an interesting analysis of the declining share of income going to workers, which is being driven by automation and globalisation:

After being largely stable in many countries for decades, the share of national income paid to workers has been falling since the 1980s. Chapter 3 of the April 2017 World Economic Outlook finds that this trend is driven by rapid progress in technology and global integration.

Labor’s share of income declines when wages grow more slowly than productivity, or the amount of output per hour of work. The result is that a growing fraction of productivity gains has been going to capital. And since capital tends to be concentrated in the upper ends of the income distribution, falling labor income shares are likely to raise income inequality…

Zionistas-in-Chief

  • 4 key points from President Assad’s first post-attack interview

President Bashar al-Assad clarifies Syria’s current position vis-a-vis the United States.

    1. Russia Did Not Have Time to Warn

When Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was asked if he had prior warning from Russia that the US was about to attack he said that he did not,

“No, they (Russia) didn’t warn us because they didn’t have the time to warn, because the Americans called them maybe a few minutes before the launching, or some say after the launching, because it takes time to reach the base. But actually, we had indications that there was something that was going to happen, and we took many measures in that regard”.

    2. No Retaliation Against US Forces

Contrary to fake news reports from throughout the mainstream and alt-media, reports which were debunked exclusively in The Duran, Syria, like Russia and Iran are not planning military retaliation against US forces.

President Assad made it clear that Syria, like her allies, plans to stay the course.

“Actually, if you want to talk about retaliation, we are talking about missiles coming from hundreds of miles, which is out of our reach, but actually the real war in Syria is not about those missiles; it’s about supporting the terrorists. This is the most dangerous part of this war, and our response is going to be what we started from the very first day: is smashing the terrorists everywhere in Syria. When we get rid of the terrorists, we wouldn’t worry about anything else at that time. So, this is our response. It’s a response, not reaction”.

    3. The Attack Did Little Damage To Syria’s Fighting Capability

US Defence Secretary James ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis said that the US strikes eliminated 20% of Syria’s air force. This is a fake statistic as President Assad explained,

“I don’t know what’s the criteria, what’s the reference of 20%, what’s the hundred percent for them? Is it the number of airplanes? Is it the quality? Is it, how to say, the active airplanes and stored airplanes? I don’t know what do they mean by this. No, actually, what we and the Russians announced about a few airplanes being destroyed, most of them are the old ones, some of them were not active anyway. This is the reality, and the proof is that, since the strike, we haven’t stopped attacking terrorists all over Syria. So, we didn’t feel that we are really affected. Our firepower, our ability to attack the terrorists hasn’t been affected by this strike”.

Assad continued saying that last week’s missile strike is not as cataclysmic as many observers have been led to believe,

“No, no, it’s (the attack) actually part of the context, the same context for six years; it took different shapes, but the core of the American policy and the Western policy towards what’s happening in Syria, it hasn’t changed at all. Forget about the statements; sometimes we have high-pitch statements, sometimes you have low-pitch statements, but it’s the same policy”.

    4. Assad Would Still Be Willing To Work With The US Under Certain Conditions.

President Assad said that if Donald Trump was serious about working with countries like Russia as part of an anti-terrorist coalition that he would welcome US assistance in this respect.

    The Syrian President explained,

“…If they are serious in fighting terrorists, we’re going to be partners, and I said not only the United States; whoever wants to fight the terrorists, we are partners. This is basic for us, basic principle, let’s say. Actually, what has been proven recently, as I said earlier, that they are hand in glove with those terrorists, the United States and the West, they’re not serious in fighting the terrorists, and yesterday some of their statesmen were defending ISIS. They were saying that ISIS doesn’t have chemical weapons. They are defending ISIS against the Syrian government and the Syrian Army. So, actually, you cannot talk about partnership between us who work against the terrorists and who fight the terrorism and the others who are supporting explicitly the terrorists”.

Assad then offered his own assessment of Donald Trump’s apparent policy U-turn

“…I was very cautious in saying any opinion regarding him before he became President and after. I always say let’s see what he’s going to do, we wouldn’t comment on statements. So, actually, this is the first proof that it’s not about the President in the United State; it’s about the regime and the deep state or the deep regime in the United States is still the same, it doesn’t change. The President is only one of the performers on their theatre, if he wants to be a leader, he cannot, because as some say he wanted to be a leader, Trump wanted to be a leader, but every President there, if he wants to be a real leader, later he’s going to eat his words, swallow his pride if he has pride at all, and make a 180 degree U-turn, otherwise he would pay the price politically”.

  • Jared Kushner fired me over Israel ten years ago

Donald Trump has now named his son-in-law Jared Kushner as a senior adviser, notably on Middle East/Israel issues, and as Kushner fired me ten years ago over these issues, it seemed a good time to review my memories of our (limited) interactions and do what journalists do, make a prognosis about his future efforts.

Kushner was 25 when he bought the New York Observer from investment banker/artist Arthur Carter in 2006, and as all such transactions do, the move set off panic on the editorial side of the paper. The editor, my dear friend Peter Kaplan, now deceased, was at once engaged in a struggle with his new boss over the paper’s news budget and independence. For my part I had been a columnist for a few years, protected against attacks and my own ineptitude by my Harvard chum Kaplan (yes, Virginia, that’s how media works), and had lately started Mondoweiss there as a personal blog, and because I was vehemently against the Iraq war and beginning to connect that tragedy to the US relationship to Israel in my postings, I was apprehensive about Kushner’s view of the blog and me. I knew that he had been a big supporter of the orthodox Jewish Chabad House at Harvard and had lauded Alan Dershowitz there. Not a good sign — when I was discovering Rachel Corrie and The Israel Lobby.

I didn’t last as long. Jared and I had a few polite conversations in the year that we cohabited on Broadway, and two very uncomfortable meetings over Israel and Palestine. One was before I went out there in July 2006 on his dime to see the country for the first time, during the Lebanon War, and the second one was after I got back that August. In the first, Kushner told me about his Holocaust background, his grandparents who barely survived, and his regard for Israel. When I got back, Kushner and Brian Kempner, the newspaper’s publisher who had worked at the Israel lobby group AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee), couldn’t wait to hear what I had seen out there, they said. But when I started talking about the occupation, the room went cold as the poles, and Kushner gazed right through me with those unsmiling dark little eyes. Kaplan was even more uncomfortable than I was, and thankfully brought the tortuous meeting to a close.

But I managed to get a frank description of apartheid in Hebron into the pages of the Observer.

This couldn’t last. In February 2007 Kaplan closed his office door and said he was a Zionist, Kushner was a Zionist, Kempner was a Zionist, and the janitor was a Zionist, too, and the newspaper would not pay for me to blog, as I was demanding (at that time I was only paid for published columns). It was fitting; I was gone.

  • Trump Has A New Red Line In Syria

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer experienced a Freudian slip when he accidentally said America’s goal in the region was to “destabilize Syria” — before he realized what he had said and attempted to backtrack. Then, he accidentally said it again. And just one day before Secretary of State Rex Tillerson left for Moscow, he told reporters the U.S. would come to the defense of innocent civilians “anywhere in the world.” Spicer elaborated on Tillerson’s sentiments.

“When you watch babies and children being gassed and suffer under barrel bombs, you are instantaneously moved to action,” the press secretary said. “I think this president’s made it very clear that if those actions were to continue, further action will definitely be considered by the United States.”

The reference to barrel bombs, something the U.S. has accused Syria’s president Bashar al-Assad of using for almost half a decade, is a new addition to an already complicated red line concocted by Obama and pursued further by the Trump administration.

When Spicer was pressed about whether the administration now believes more conventional modes of warfare may also constitute a red line, he replied:

I think the president’s been very clear that there were a number of lines crossed last week … The answer is if you gas a baby, if you put a barrel bomb into innocent people, I think you will see a response from this president. That is unacceptable.”

However, the White House later said that Spicer was referring to barrel bombs carrying industrial chemicals like chlorine. But as the Guardian notes, this would still represent a substantial expansion of the U.S.’ rules of engagement in Syria.

No one seems to see the irony in the fact that Tillerson stated the U.S. would come to the defense of innocent civilians “anywhere in the world,” all while it massacres Iraqi civilians without so much as a blink from the corporate media. Or the fact that the U.S. is directly enabling Saudi Arabia to commit a war of aggression in Yemen, even though legal experts have warned that American contribution to the war makes the U.S. a co-belligerent in Saudi Arabia’s vast list of war crimes.

  • Lost at Tora Bora

Well past midnight one morning in early December 2001, according to American intelligence officials, Osama bin Laden sat with a group of top aides — including members of his elite international 055 Brigade — in the mountainous redoubt of Tora Bora in eastern Afghanistan. Outside, it was blustery and bitterly cold; many of the passes of the White Mountains, of which Tora Bora forms a part, were already blocked by snow. But inside the cave complex, where bin Laden had sought his final refuge from the American war in Afghanistan — a war in which Washington, that October, had struck back for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks — bin Laden munched on olives and sipped sugary mint tea.   The first time bin Laden had seen the Tora Bora caves, he had been a young mujahedeen fighter and a recent university graduate with a degree in civil engineering. It had been some 20 years before, during Washington’s first Afghan war, the decade-long, C.I.A.-financed jihad of the 1980’s against the Soviet occupation. Rising to more than 13,000 feet, 35 miles southwest of the provincial capital of Jalalabad, Tora Bora was a fortress of snow-capped peaks, steep valleys and fortified caves. Its miles of tunnels, bunkers and base camps, dug deeply into the steep rock walls, had been part of a C.I.A.-financed complex built for the mujahedeen. Bin Laden had flown in dozens of bulldozers and other pieces of heavy equipment from his father’s construction empire, the Saudi Binladin Group, one of the most prosperous construction companies in Saudi Arabia and throughout the Persian Gulf. According to one frequently told story, bin Laden would drive one of the bulldozers himself across the precipitous mountain peaks, constructing defensive tunnels and storage depots.

  • 1983 CIA Document Reveals Plan To Destroy Syria, Foreshadows Current Crisis

Prophetically foreshadowing the current crisis (and apparent action plan), leaked CIA documents from the reign of Bashar al-Assad’s father in the 1980s show a Washington Deep State plan coalescing to “bring real muscle to bear against Syria,” toppling its leader (in favor of one amenable to US demands) , severing ties with Russia (its primary arms dealer), and paving the way for an oil and gas pipeline of Washington’s choosing.

As ActivistPost.com’s Brandon Turbeville detailed (just a day before Trump unleashed his Tomahawks), as the Syrian crisis enters its sixth year, the Donald Trump administration is looking more and more like the Obama administration every day. With the Trump regime refusing to open useful dialogue with Russia regarding Syria, its obvious anti-Iran and pro-Israel positioning, and support for a very questionable “safe zone” plan for Syria, the odds of a rational U.S. policy in regards to Syria has lower and lower odds of existence as time progresses.

Yet, despite the fact that the Trump administration is apparently poised to continue the Obama regime’s proxy war of aggression against the people of Syria, an example of seamless transition, it should also be remembered that the plan to destroy Syria did not begin with Obama but with the Bush administration.

Even now, as the world awaits the continuation of the Syrian war through a Democratic and Republican administration, the genesis of that war goes back to the Republican Bush administration, demonstrating that there is indeed an overarching agenda and an overarching infrastructure of an oligarchical deep state intent on moving forward regardless of which party is seemingly in power.

As journalist Seymour Hersh wrote in his article, “The Redirection,”

To undermine Iran, which is predominantly Shiite, the Bush Administration has decided, in effect, to reconfigure its priorities in the Middle East. In Lebanon, the Administration has cooperated with Saudi Arabia’s government, which is Sunni, in clandestine operations that are intended to weaken Hezbollah, the Shiite organization that is backed by Iran. The U.S. has also taken part in clandestine operations aimed at Iran and its ally Syria. A by-product of these activities has been the bolstering of Sunni extremist groups that espouse a militant vision of Islam and are hostile to America and sympathetic to Al Qaeda.

“Extremist groups that espouse a militant vision of Islam” who are “hostile to America and sympathetic to al-Qaeda” are the definition of the so-called “rebels” turned loose on Syria in 2011. Likewise, the fact that both Iran and Hezbollah, who are natural enemies of al-Qaeda and such radical Sunni groups, are involved in the battle against ISIS and other related terrorist organizations in Syria proves the accuracy of the article on another level.

Harmful Non-Disclosure Tricks

  • From aspiring pop star to paralysed in just days: Shocking picture of 12-year-old left bed-ridden in hospital after being given controversial HPV vaccine – but doctors want to SECTION her

    • Mia Blesky, of Reading, was given the Gardasil vaccine in September at school
    • The next day her legs felt heavy and she had a burning sensation in her spine
    • The straight A student went on to lose all sensation in her legs, body and arms
    • However, her doctors claim that her problem is completely psychological
    • It comes after reports told of another teenage girl who was also left paralysed

Standing proudly as she clutched a microphone and belted out a tune, 12-year-old Mia Blesky dreamed of being a pop star.

However, just days after being videoed she found herself unable to move and just weeks later she was left paralysed from the neck down and in hospital.

Mia’s family claim she has suffered an alleged reaction to the controversial HPV vaccine.

However, doctors claim that her problem is psychological – and the only help they’ve offered the family is to section her.

A harrowing video shows how her health deteriorated rapidly – as she shuffles before lying still in her adapted bed at home and croons softly, unable to move.

It comes after reports in December told of another teenage girl who was left in hospital after having the vaccine to protect her against cervical cancer.

Just weeks after having the jab, Ruby Shallom began to suffer from stomach spasms. Her muscles eventually became weaker, and two years after being given the jab she woke up with no feelings in her legs whatsoever.

  • The cruel autism trick played on vaccine-damaged children

Q: So what is your point?

A: If a parent applies to the US federal vaccine court, for compensation, because her child was severely damaged by a vaccine, and if she or her doctor calls that damage “autism,” there is almost no chance the government will award her compensation.

    Q: Why?

A: Because the government is committed to saying, come hell or high water, vaccines don’t cause autism. But if that same parent says her child developed “encephalopathy”—a generalized term meaning a condition that adversely affects the structure or function of the brain—her chances of receiving compensation increase by a small percentage.

Q: Even if she says a vaccine caused the encephalopathy?

A: Yes. It’s all a word game, and if the parent doesn’t know how to play it, she’ll almost certainly lose.

    Q: That’s ridiculous.

    A: Indeed it is.

Q: If none of these neurological disease-labels in the DSM has a specific and defining diagnostic test, then why doesn’t the parent just tell the vaccine court, “My child’s brain was damaged by a vaccine”?

A: Because the rules demand that she present evidence that the vaccine caused a known and officially accepted disease condition with a disease label.

Q: But the truth is, the vaccine caused brain damage.

A: Truth is not the goal of the government’s game.

Q: Are you saying there is no such thing as autism?

A: I’m saying there is no conclusive evidence for the existence of autism as a specific condition. Otherwise, there would be a defining diagnostic test for it, and there isn’t. There are various causes for neurological and brain damage. When a vaccine is the cause, it should be called VACCINE DAMAGE, and compensation should be awarded on that basis. Period. Stop the fiddling and game playing.

Q: Let me see if I can sum all this up. First, we have a meaningless label called “autism.” It’s meaningless because there are no defining diagnostic tests for autism. Therefore, there is no proof that autism is a specific condition, beyond the fact that a child has been neurologically damaged in some way. But most people, and the government, and the medical system, ALL BUY INTO THE IDEA THAT AUTISM IS REAL AND SPECIFIC…AND THEN THE GOVERNMENT TURNS AROUND AND SAYS: A PARENT WHO IS SEEKING COMPENSATION FOR VACCINE DAMAGE, ON THE BASIS THAT A VACCINE CAUSED HER CHILD TO “DEVELOP AUTISM,” WON’T BE COMPENSATED, BECAUSE THERE IS NO PROOF THAT ANY VACCINE CAUSES AUTISM. THE GOVERNMENT IS ESSENTIALLY SAYING: THERE IS NO PROOF A VACCINE CAN CAUSE A CONDITION WHICH HASN’T BEEN PROVEN TO EXIST.

    A: Yes, that’s correct.

Q: This is even crazier than I thought it was.

A: You can add in one more factor. There are parents with vaccine-damaged children, and these children have been diagnosed with autism. If you tell these parents there is no proof that autism exists, and their child simply has devastating neurological vaccine damage, they will protest. They’re caught in a situation they don’t fully understand, and they’re determined to hold on to the idea that their child “has autism.” They want that label to be applied to their child. For them, it provides an “explanation” for what happened to their child. They won’t let it go. And THEN, they will go to the federal vaccine court and ask for compensation, not realizing that if they use the word “autism,” that’s doom. The court will deny their claim.

Q: It’s like being caught in a maze.

A: That’s exactly what it is.

Study Health Risks

  • Norwegian study links flu vaccine to narcolepsy risk

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health has found an elevated risk of narcolepsy among children and young adults who were vaccinated against the swine flu seven years ago. Some who did not take the vaccine against the pandemic of 2009 also developed this severe sleeping disorder.

Researchers at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health have followed up those under 30 who took the flu shots and those who didn’t during the swine flu (H1N1) pandemic to appraise whether the vaccine entailed serious side-effects.

The study has shown an increased incidence of narcolepsy among those who took the vaccine, informs the institute. Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder which upsets sleep-wake cycles and is often characterised by daytime sleepiness and sudden lapses into sleep.

A total of 72 persons aged five to 26 were diagnosed with narcolepsy among Norway’s then population of five million between 2009 and the end of 2012. Their average age when symptoms showed up was 12.

Among these 72, 56 were vaccinated and 16 were not. This means of course that unvaccinated persons also ran a certain risk of narcolepsy.

The Institute and other public health officials in Norway recommended vaccinations to much of the population in the autumn of 2009.

    Five times the risk

In a three-year follow-up study it was found that those who had been vaccinated ran five times the risk of developing narcolepsy as opposed to those who didn’t take the flu shots. The study was carried out by the physician and researcher Lill Trogstad and colleagues at the institute.

Norwegian Institute of Public Health Director Camilla Stoltenberg commented on the swine flu vaccination issue this week. She said in a comparable situation today the institute would be more forthright about uncertainties and medical disagreements regarding the vaccine than its spokespersons were in 2009 and 2010.

  • Popular “Diet” Ingredient Now Linked to Leukemia and Lymphoma in New Landmark Study on Humans

As few as one diet soda daily may increase the risk for leukemia in men and women, and for multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma in men, according to new results from the longest-ever running study on aspartame as a carcinogen in humans. Importantly, this is the most comprehensive, long-term study ever completed on this topic, so it holds more weight than other past studies which appeared to show no risk. And disturbingly, it may also open the door for further similar findings on other cancers in future studies.

The most thorough study yet on aspartame – Over two million person-years

For this study, researchers prospectively analyzed data from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study for a 22-year period. A total of 77,218 women and 47,810 men were included in the analysis, for a total of 2,278,396 person-years of data. Apart from sheer size, what makes this study superior to other past studies is the thoroughness with which aspartame intake was assessed. Every two years, participants were given a detailed dietary questionnaire, and their diets were reassessed every four years. Previous studies which found no link to cancer only ever assessed participants’ aspartame intake at one point in time, which could be a major weakness affecting their accuracy.

One diet soda a day increases leukemia, multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphomas

The combined results of this new study showed that just one 12-fl oz. can (355 ml) of diet soda daily leads to:

    – 42 percent higher leukemia risk in men and women (pooled analysis)
    – 102 percent higher multiple myeloma risk (in men only)
    – 31 percent higher non-Hodgkin lymphoma risk (in men only)

These results were based on multi-variable relative risk models, all in comparison to participants who drank no diet soda. It is unknown why only men drinking higher amounts of diet soda showed increased risk for multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Note that diet soda is the largest dietary source of aspartame (by far) in the U.S. Every year, Americans consume about 5,250 tons of aspartame in total, of which about 86 percent (4,500 tons) is found in diet sodas.

Confirmation of previous high quality research on animals

This new study shows the importance of the quality of research. Most of the past studies showing no link between aspartame and cancer have been criticized for being too short in duration and too inaccurate in assessing long-term aspartame intake. This new study solves both of those issues.

Standardless Standards

  • Texas Can No Longer Fabricate Its Own Medical Standards to Justify Executions

In a 5-3 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday concluded that current medical standards must be considered when determining whether a defendant facing the death penalty is intellectually disabled and thus barred from execution under the Eighth Amendment. The ruling was a strong rebuke, particularly to the state of Texas, which has long based such determinations on outdated science in concert with a set of subjective — if not simply stereotyping — standards that were largely based on a fictional character.

The high court’s decision also means that Texas inmate Bobby James Moore, who was originally sent to death row in 1980, will again have a chance to prove that he is ineligible for the death penalty. Moore’s lawyers say that his cognitive disabilities are so great that to execute him would violate the constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment.

“The Supreme Court has sensibly directed Texas courts to be informed by the medical community’s current diagnostic framework before imposing our society’s gravest sentence,” said Moore’s attorney, Cliff Stone.

Moore was 20 years old in 1980 when he was involved with two others in the botched robbery of the Birdsall Super Market in Houston that ended with the shooting death of a 70-year-old store clerk. Less than three months later, Moore was sentenced to death for his role in the crime.

His case has been plagued from the start. Moore’s trial attorneys floated a fake alibi defense and failed to present exculpatory evidence that suggested the shooting was accidental. A federal judge found the misconduct so egregious that he ordered that Moore be resentenced. But Moore’s attorneys still failed to do any investigation that might have mitigated their client’s culpability — at a hearing they presented nothing about his childhood abuse or his serious learning deficits, evidence that could have convinced a jury to spare his life — and in February 2001, Moore was again sentenced to die.

  • Fake Olive Oil Companies Revealed – Stop Buying These Brands Now

This is disturbing! 70% of Olive oil available in stores in the US has actually been cut with cheaper, nastier oils – meaning its fake!

There’s an enemy at the gates, it has been slowly infiltrating our olive oil market and corrupting one of the products that we all know is a healthy, sustainable option and one of Europe’s secrets to longevity. That’s right, 7 of the biggest olive oil manufacturers in the US have been cutting their products with cheaper, inferior oils (such as sunflower oil or canola oil) in order to minimize the cost of production, but it has come at a huge cost to everyone who invests in this healthy alternative.

And this is not too dissimilar to 2008, when over 400 Italian police officers participated in a major crackdown called “Operation Golden Oil.” This resulted in the seizure of 85 oil farms who were adding certain percentages of chlorophyll to sunflower and canola oil and selling it on as extra virgin olive oil. The oil is mixed, perfumed, coloured and then flavoured before being sold to the producer as “extra virgin.” These busts prompted the Australian government to investigate their own olive oil market, and indeed, after testing all of its brands’ “extra virgin olive oils” in their laboratories, none were given the 2012 certification for being a pure olive oil.

All of these scams prompted the University of California to carry out studies on 124 imported brands of extra virgin olive oil, and they found that over 70% of the samples failed the test.

Pressured To Death

  • Heavy man — Cornell’s Hiperbaric 55 pressures pathogens

Pressure kills bugs. Anyone who’s ever stepped on a creepy crawly and heard that familiar crunch knows that.

It takes a lot more pressure than a pair of penny loafers, though, to kill microscopic pathogens like E. coli and Listeria, and Cornell University is proving its heavy-weight status as a food safety leader with its new high-pressure food processor.

Installed in January at Cornell’s New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, NY, the Hiperbaric 55 machine is the first commercial-grade processor in the U.S. to be installed within a Biohazard Level 2 facility. That  means researchers will be able to introduce pathogens to foods and test how well the pressure system kills them.

“High-pressure food processing takes ready-to-eat foods, already in their final packages, surrounds the packages with water, then subjects them to isostatic pressure up to 87,000 pounds per square inch. For comparison, that’s more than six times the pressure at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest ocean trench on Earth,” according to a news release.

Food science professor Randy Worobo is overseeing the new validation center that houses the high-pressure processing unit. The center is part of the Institute for Food Safety at Cornell University, established in 2015 with $2 million in state funding.

“The food industry is adapting high-pressure processing very rapidly because it retains the fresh-like character of the food products while guaranteeing safety by inactivating foodborne pathogens,” Worobo said in the release.

High-pressure treatment is especially suited to fresh, packaged, ready-to-eat foods because unlike heat treatment to kill pathogens or chemical applications to control spoilage because it does not alter the flavor or texture of the food. As the ready-to-eat (RTE) market continues to grow food manufacturers and retailers are seeking methods to ensure food safety. The USDA’s Economic Research Service reports RTE foods grew at twice the rate of other grocery products in the mid-2000s.

“Because high-pressure processing is such a new technology, the federal regulatory agencies are not that familiar with it, and what they expect is for companies to have validation studies that actually demonstrate that under this pressure, for this time, with this food, that you get a consistent pathogen reduction that meets regulatory guidelines,” Worobo said. “Cornell is setting the standards that companies will use to bring fresh, high-quality foods to market in a safe way.”
