The University said its Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WILDCRU) happened to have been working with its China-based colleagues in gathering data collected from across Wuhan’s wet markets through May 2017 and November 2019 to study a different disease.
Federal authorities have received over 800 reports of heart inflammation in people who received a COVID-19 vaccine, a health official said Thursday.
The reports of myocarditis or pericarditis were submitted to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, a passive reporting system run jointly by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration, through May 31.
Most of the reports, 475, described myocarditis or pericarditis appearing in people ages 30 or younger.
The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration says the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine far outweigh the risks after a woman died from a blood clot in the brain in the state of New South Wales (NSW).
The TGA says the 52-year-old who died was among four new clotting cases linked to the vaccine.
The other three involved a 77-year-old man from NSW, a 70-year-old man from South Australia, and an 87-year-old South Australian woman.
There are also four other cases with a “probable” link to the AstraZeneca vaccine, the TGA said. They are a woman, 50, and two men, aged 83 and 91, all from NSW, and a woman, 74, from Victoria.
The clotting condition linked to the vaccine is called thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS).
So far Australia has seen 35 confirmed cases of TTS, and 13 probable cases.
Two died in hospital, 15 remain in hospital including one who is critically ill in intensive care, and 31 have been discharged and are recovering, including some who still need medical care.

Injection Drug Use and Wound Botulism
People who inject illicit drugs have a risk for getting wound botulism (“BOT-choo-liz-um”), a serious illness that can be life-threatening. Your risk of getting wound botulism increases if you inject illicit drugs, especially black tar heroin, under your skin (“skin popping”) or into your muscle (“muscle popping” or “muscling”).
Wound botulism is a rare but serious illness that happens when a germ called Clostridium botulinum gets into a wound and makes a toxin. This toxin attacks your body’s nerves, which can make it hard to breathe and can cause muscle weakness and even death. If you get wound botulism, you will need medicine called antitoxin. The antitoxin can stop the toxin from causing more harm, but it can’t undo the damage already done. Even after receiving antitoxin, you might need to stay in the hospital for several weeks or even months before you recover enough to go home.
Some of the symptoms you might have are:
- Double vision
- Blurred vision
- Drooping eyelids
- Slurred speech
- Difficulty swallowing
- A thick-feeling tongue
- Dry mouth
- Muscle weakness
As the disease gets worse, you may develop more symptoms, such as:
- Difficulty breathing
- Paralysis
In New Mexico. Is it a problem?
Health officials in New Mexico are investigating two suspected cases of wound botulism in residents with reported injection drug use. The state noted that two prior cases were reported in January, with cases primarily linked to injecting black tar heroin and methamphetamines.
U.S. consumer prices surged in May at the fastest annual rate since August 2008, the Labor Department announced on Thursday.
The consumer price index in May increased 5 percent year over year, higher than the 4.7 percent increase that was expected.
Prices saw a 0.6 percent increase month over month, also above the 0.4 percent increase that analysts surveyed by Refinitiv had predicted.
The annual data has a “base effects” skew caused by the drop in prices that occurred at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.
Used car and truck prices soared 7.3 percent, accounting for about one-third of the index’s rise. Food prices matched April’s increase at 0.4 percent. Energy prices remained the same from the month prior as a decline in gasoline prices was offset by a rise in natural gas and electricity costs.
