The U.S. Forest Service, under the Trump administration, is moving to repeal the Roadless Rule, a potential shift for motorized trail users and advocates of traditional access.
Critics argue the rule has systematically restricted access to thousands of miles of established routes, serving as a stepping stone toward mandatory wilderness designations.
Roughly 760,000 miles of surveyed roads across 640 million acres cross about one acre per mile, stretching that footprint into a very narrow strip along the route.
Beyond recreation, these routes provide critical ground access to fight wildfires, forest management, livestock operations, and the preservation of established public easements.
