This Is Why I'm Here

I am a talker by nature. Nine years ago at the Bundy Ranch et al. trial, transitioning from internet radio to the written word was a necessity born of circumstance—and it was a process I hated.

Back then, it would take me 45 minutes just to get a single paragraph straight. But when I was challenged to write exactly what I meant to say, I took it seriously.

What began as a difficult chore has transformed into a daily passion. Writing became essential to stand as a witness to the world around us.

It is the way I honor the events at Bundy Ranch, the life and loss of LaVoy Finicum, and the stories of the many people I have spent time with. Today, those experiences give me the ammunition I need to step forward and tell these stories.

These are perhaps two of my most favorite pictures ever. They tell a story that spans nearly a decade.

The first one features Ammon Bundy in 2017 with his two youngest children. This moment came right after he was released from two long years locked away in federal custody. The second one was taken last year, showing a reunion as the children have grown.

Moments like these are the exact reason I believe my voice is so important. By stepping up as a citizen reporter, I am working to preserve history and stand in to make a difference in the outcome.

This is why I stand for ranchers' rights and western land use. But it goes beyond the land—it is why I stand for political prisoners like Jeffrey Weinhaus, Rick Koerber, and others. It is why I speak for the other Americans who have been locked away, killed, or silenced.

We no longer have to depend on the mainstream media to tell us what happens; we find the truth through independent voices who are actually there to witness it.
