Recently, Democrats and 19 Republicans tanked a proposed extension of FISA (the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act).
Speaker Mike Johnson was furious after the vote collapsed, publicly arguing that the surveillance tool is absolutely essential for "keeping the country safe" and warning that letting it lapse would put national security at risk.
To prove his point, Johnson had this to say: "Most recently, the most threatening thing I've seen yet was the naked bicyclers in Portland who were protesting ICE down there. I mean, it's getting really ugly."
But I'm not buying their security narrative. I'd argue that FISA has been abused regularly to conduct warrantless backdoor searches on American citizens, turning a tool meant for foreign threats inward.
For many, Johnson's push isn't about safety at all—it's about protecting the government's ability to spy on its own people without a warrant.
When you look past the political theater and the "national security" excuses used to justify expanding the surveillance state, it boils down to this:
"Don't you worry none. We can raise a false flag quicker than a cat licks its ass. Then, maybe then, you'll be happy to have us up yours." 🙄
